A $50 per hour tutoring rate rarely means $50 in your pocket for every hour you work. Lesson prep, marking, parent updates, driving between homes and card processing fees all eat into it, and most tutors never add them up. That makes it hard to know whether a rate is fair, whether in-person sessions are worth the drive, or when it is time to raise prices.

This calculator takes your advertised rate, your session length, the unpaid minutes you spend around each session and the processing fee your payment method charges, then works out your net pay per hour of total working time. It does not deduct income tax or self-employment tax, and it treats every session as delivered and paid, so the result is a best case you can adjust with your own numbers.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the hourly rate you actually charge and the length of a typical session.
  2. Add the unpaid minutes you spend before and after each session, plus round trip travel if you teach in person.
  3. Set the processing fee for the way most families pay you and the number of sessions in a normal week, then read your effective hourly rate.

What the math assumes

  • Every scheduled session is delivered and paid; no-shows and late cancellations are not modeled here.
  • The processing fee is applied as a flat percentage of each session. Fixed per-transaction fees of a few cents are ignored unless you fold them into the percentage.
  • Prep and travel minutes are treated as fully unpaid and are added to the session length to get total working time.
  • Income tax, self-employment tax, software subscriptions and materials are not deducted; the result is pre-tax net pay.
  • A week is whatever number of sessions you enter; holidays and summer breaks are not averaged in.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my effective hourly rate lower than my advertised rate?

Because the calculator divides your net pay by all the time a session really takes, including prep and travel, and removes the payment processing fee. If those extra minutes are large compared with the session itself, the effective rate drops quickly.

Should I count travel time for online tutoring?

No. Leave travel at 0 for online sessions. Running the tool twice, once with travel at 0 and once with your real drive time, is a fair way to decide whether in-person sessions justify a higher rate.

Does this calculator include taxes?

No. The result is pre-tax net pay. In the US, self-employed tutors usually owe both income tax and self-employment tax on top of this, so set money aside accordingly.

How can I raise my effective rate without raising prices?

Shorten unpaid prep by reusing materials, cluster in-person students by location to cut travel, move families to lower-fee payment methods such as bank transfer, or sell prepaid packages so you process fewer transactions.
